Zinc oxide – applied externally – is used to treat non-weeping, uninfected skin damage associated with redness, itchiness or pain. These include, among other things, superficial skin injuries, skin rashes, chickenpox, hives, first-degree burns and skin irritations from nappy rash in infants and toddlers. Zinc oxide promotes the closing of the wound, improves wound healing and has an antibiotic effect on bacteria. The contracting effect of the zinc seals the surface of the wound and reduces secretion from the wound.
