also referred to as “propane-1,2,3-triol” or glycerine, is an osmotic laxative, lubricant and intestine-irritating laxative all at the same time. It softens hardened stools, promotes intestinal activity and stimulates bowel movement. At the same time, it decreases the stool’s friction, which additionally eases bowel movement. It is commonly used in the form of suppositories in the event of constipation or painful defecation, especially in combination with haemorrhoids and fissures in the anal area. Furthermore, glycerol is used as an excipient in a number of preparations and a wide range of dosage forms.
One of the most common causes of constipation is not consuming enough water. Consequently, you should always make sure that your child drinks enough – especially when they are ill or when it is very warm outside. This equally applies to adults, of course.
